A new approach to photography
To keep it short: I no longer care about technical quality.
Before, like a lot of photographers and filmmakers, I was very concerned with "preserving image quality".
You shoot "in log" or "in raw", at maximum resolution, to keep as much latitude as possible for post-production. That's where the real choices get made.
Now I decide everything as I shoot, with no way to change it afterwards.
Formats, colors, framing: it's all fixed in the moment. I don't retouch anything.
Then when I get home, I immediately throw out 98% of the photos. Right away, no second thoughts.
Even the ones I would have kept before "because they're not bad".
Either I feel some inexplicable pull, or I toss it.
And yes, so: I've given up shooting film. I think I was doing it out of snobbery.
Let's be honest, I loved the result. The grain, the character. The nobility of film.
Now the only thing that interests me is the process.
Spontaneity. Deciding in the moment. The irreversible choice that captures the emotion of a precise moment.
So much of what I used to do was built on the fear of regret. Keeping everything just "in case". But in the end, it only piled up. For nothing.
I don't want to accumulate anymore.
After three days of this practice, I've already learned very strong things about my own tastes that I hadn't identified after decades of raw and film.
I'm not a fan of photos of people – even when I capture beautiful moments. Nor of too many landscapes.
I like matter, texture. Nooks packed with detail, dense, rich, with a bit of light here and there.
That's the central question of my current exploration in photography, but also of everything I'm putting in place right now:
"What do I actually like?"
