Bill Gates and AI
I listened to the podcast where Bill Gates lays out his very alarmist stance on artificial intelligence (probably for good reason). Three things I noted, not all about AI:
- AI makes it possible today to carry out cyber or biological attacks that could kill millions of people. The lack of guardrails here is a far more urgent danger than an AI that becomes "master of the world."
- People in the poorest countries speak languages that neither AI nor the web has been translated into. No way to look up unusual bleeding in the middle of the night. No way to know which seed to plant for a better chance of feeding yourself. Information is as scarce as everything else.
- We're not ready for the economic upheaval that's coming: every job is going to be replaced. Surveys already show that people would rather talk to an AI nurse or therapist – more patient, forgets nothing, always available – than to a human.
Add that to the pile of problems.
