Why I no longer talk about my projects

Several times recently, I found myself uncomfortable when asked:

"So, what are your projects right now?"

I feel like I switch to autopilot, reciting a series of plans disconnected from me, from the present, from the conversation.

Let me settle this once and for all:

I don't have projects.

Either I'm doing something right now, actively.

And if so, yes, of course, we can talk about it.

We won't be able to help it: it's what I'm busy with, who I am, what emanates from me.

Even if we don't discuss it directly, it will impact the time we spend together. It'll be there.

As for the rest – what I'll do later – who knows. I'm not interested in talking about it. I don't think about it. I have no plan.

Future activity will be a natural consequence of present activity.

I'll discover it at the same time as you when it comes.

And on that day, of course, we can discuss it.

To be clear: this note is not directed at others.

People can ask me whatever they like and I hold nothing against anyone for inquiring about my projects. On the contrary: it's a sign of interest that I appreciate.

I'm writing this note so I don't trap myself in my own answers.

From now on, the policy is this: I don't discuss the future.
